DECEMBER 2003 NEWS!

New Jack Davis
2003 Christmas Ad
With Rudolph!

Our good friend ARTIST JACK DAVIS created a brand new newspaper ad of SANTA delivering RANKIN/BASS books around NEW YORK for CHRISTMAS 2003 featuring everyone's favorite reindeer!

Arthur Rankin Signs PATCH GAME sets!

ARTHUR RANKIN signed some games for the fine folks at PATCH GAMES and they sent along some for the NEW YORK events! We will raffle off a few here at RANKINBASS.COM this Holiday season. All customers who purchased items from our site in DECEMBER have a chance to win one of these collectible RUDOLPH board games/puzzles!

Billie Mae Richards Visits rankinbass.com!

Billie Mae Richards and our good friend David Scheve Over the past few years we have established a GREAT friendship with the voice of RUDOLPH... BILLIE MAE RICHARDS! She was quite thrilled with RICK's book THE MAKING OF THE RANKIN/BASS HOLIDAY CLASSIC: RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER and keeps in touch with RANKINBASS.COM quite regularly.

She has signed many items for us and has done an official signing to Benefit ST. JUDES HOSPITAL at THEDEEPARCHIVES.COM. For this special event she has signed all sorts of GREAT items along with many of the RUDOLPH voice actors and other RANKIN/BASS Alumni! If you are looking for something signed by our friend BILLIE MAE...visit THEDEEPARCHIVES.COM. Also if in CANADA, Listen for RICK and BILLIE MAE to appear on the GLENN & GARY show on 570 NEWS RADIO over the HOLIDAYS!! RICK and BILLIE MAE have been doing RADIO shows together all month... one of the most memorable was in the QUAD CITIES 12-09-03 on the DWYER & MICHAELS MORNING SHOW on Q106.5!

Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town ....
But Where Is Rankin/Bass?

I was given this CD in New York by RANKIN/BASS fan Chris Wolfson at the MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO...Chris didn't want this. In all fairness, the cover of this CD is very nicely designed except for the fact that the names RANKIN/BASS and MAURY LAWS are not on the front of it. I had to complete the cover by having ARTHUR RANKIN sign it the old fashioned way.

This CD is available at WALGREENS Drug stores along with the DVDs and Videos with the same covers BUT imagine the surprise to the listeners...when they put it in their CD player and new, lackluster versions of the classic RANKIN/BASS songs start playing!!! These are 1999 Re-make versions of the CLASSIC RANKIN/BASS songs from SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN and RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER with the MAURY LAWS arrangements....BUT not the classic versions. I can't remember why GOLDEN BOOKS did these new re-makes BUT it was mentioned to me in 1999.

If you have a CD Burner, I guess you could always take the CD out of the jewel case and use it as an ornament and burn a CD of the classic versions available on the RHINO CD release of SANTA CLAUS IS COMIN' TO TOWN and the MCA CD Soundtrack of RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER to put in its place!

Rick's New York Visit!

A RANKIN/BASS Breakfast at THE PLAZA!

From left to Right: Producer/Animation Director MASAKI IIZUKA, Arthur Rankin's close friend DON, ARTHUR RANKIN and Co-Producer PETER BAKALIAN after enjoying Breakfast in the lobby of THE PLAZA,

DAVID SCHEVE from THEDEEPARCHIVES.COM shows Rick all around NEW YORK and HOBOKEN as the snow from the first Blizzard (?) of the year continues. This shot was taken after the DON DUGA event at David's Gallery took place. RICK GOLDSCHMIDT and ARTHUR RANKIN, JR. enjoy the hospitality of the MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO in New York 12-04-2003! The EVENING WITH ARTHUR RANKIN was a GREAT Success! Arthur spoke to a packed house. We would like to THANK Sherryl Woodruff, Bob Eng, Ritty Burchfield and Kiran for putting it all together!

DON DUGA pops into the MUSEUM for the book signing! Continuity Designer for RANKIN/BASS signs books at the MUSEUM from left to right: DON, BRAD, RICK and RHODA

From Left to Right: Voice Actor BRADLEY BOLKE, Rick and voice actress RHODA MANN share a laugh during the book signing after the EVENING WITH ARTHUR RANKIN at the MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO. I asked Brad to do his CHUMLEY THE WALRUS voice...which he did perfectly. RHODA brought a GREAT picture of her at age 21 with HOWDY DOODY (She was Howdy's pupeteer for the first 5 years of the series!)

ARTHUR RANKIN and MASAKI IIZUKA pose on 7th Avenue as the first NEW YORK Blizzard of the year has it's beginning flakes Rick and GENE MULLER (Rankin/Bass writer Romeo Muller's Brother) step out for a night on the town. After dinner we took a walk down to ROCKEFELLER CENTER to see the newly lit tree.

Rick Meets Millie Dillmount on Broadway!

RICK visits with 2002 TONY AWARD Winner SUTTON FOSTER. ARTHUR RANKIN recommended the Broadway play THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE while I was in NY and sent me along. I was completely blown away by Sutton's portrayal of MILLIE in the award winning Musical. It turns out that SUTTON is a big RANKIN/BASS fan as well! Don't miss this MUSICAL if you are in the NEW YORK area...DELTA BURKE, LESLIE UGGAMS and CHRISTIAN BORLE are outstanding as is the entire cast!

Other Rankin/Bass News:

CLASSIC MEDIA removed the RANKIN/BASS cover credit on their DVDs by mistake and has promised to correct the error. They were not aware of the agreement RANKIN/BASS had with GOLDEN BOOKS regarding swapping ARTHUR RANKIN'S appearance on the DVDs for the creator's credit on the covers. Since they advertise "This is the original. Accept no subsitutes", they would be better off telling our large fan base that he films are the "original" RANKIN/BASS productions!

LARRY POTASH, CO-ANCHOR of the WGN MORNING NEWS, interviewed RICK for the CHICAGO TRIBUNE'S RED EYE NEWSPAPER. Should hit news stands sometime during the week before Christmas!

DON DUGA was snowed in during the NEW YORK Blizzard last weekend (12-06). Rick appeared at the HOBOKEN GALLERY of THE DEEP ARCHIVES. Don is making up his appearance this weekend on SATURDAY 12-13 at 533 WASHINGTON STREET.

AMAZON.COM is being flooded for orders on RICK's books. They did not order enough early enough and now have posted SHIPS WITHIN 2-4 WEEKS as a result. If you order at RANKINBASS.COM by 12-19-03...you should still receive your book for CHRISTMAS. We ship PRIORITY MAIL...usually on the next morning.

RICK wants to THANK everyone for showing him a wonderful time on his NEW YORK trip the first weekend of the month...especially ARTHUR RANKIN! THE MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO put on an AMAZING event and should be commended as well!
